Burnham Civic Amenity Site

 

Although the door to door rubbish/ recycling/green waste collections are provided by Maldon District Council ,Burnham Civic Amenity Site is run by Essex County Council as one of the 23 centres for recycling household waste that it operates in the county.

The site is housed in a discreet site in Springfield Road, Burnham on Crouch at the approach to the Springfield Industrial Estate. Waste is placed in a variety of containers which are collected regularly according to their recycling abilities.

 

 

What are the opening hours of the Amenity Site?

Monday – Sunday, seven days a week, all year
Between 16 October to end of February – 8 am until 4 pm
Between 1 March and 15 October - 8 am until 5 pm
Between 1 May and 31 August Tuesdays only - open late until 7 pm

Christmas and New Year arrangements:
All centres are open from 8 am – 1 pm on Christmas Eve.
All centres are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day only.

When the site is closed can I use the bottle and clothes banks?

Maldon District Council operate a network of recycling banks that accept , bottles, cans and paper. Some charities operated clothes recycling banks.

What waste can I take to the amenity site?

Aerosols – can be recycled with cans but please make sure they are empty

Books – separate containers for hard back and paper back

Cans – Steel and aluminium food and drinks cans

Cardboard – boxes, cardboard packaging, tubes, Yellow Pages, wrapping paper, cards and brown envelopes. Please flatten boxes to save space.

Cooking Oil - please place sealed containers of cooking oil into the bin provided

Engine Oil

Fridges and Freezers - all foodstuffs removed first. Please speak to an attendant.

Glass Bottles and Jars - separate containers for clear, green and brown glass. Put blue glass in the container for green glass.

Green Garden Waste – Lawn cuttings, pruning's, weeds, dead plants, leaves, Christmas trees, turf, branches up to 30cm (12 inches) diameter. No bags please.

Hardcore (e.g. bricks and rubble) - limited to 3 site wheel barrow loads per household in any 28 day period (one car boot load)

Household batteries - where there is no dedicated recycling container, please speak to an attendant who will advise on how to recycle them at that Centre.

Mobile phones with batteries, plus accessories - in working order with SIM cards removed, in original packaging or wrapped in paper or cardboard to prevent damage. No broken phones. NEW facility for May 2007.

Non hazardous waste – which can’t be recycled, to be disposed of in the non recyclable container.

Paint – household paint, at least half full and under 10 years old. Contact the Waste and Recycling help line 0845 603 7625 for participating Centres.

Paper – newspaper, magazines, household stationery and junk mail (no brown envelopes).

Plastic bottles – eg drinks bottles, milk bottles, shampoo bottles.

Printer cartridges - in original packaging or wrapped in cardboard or paper to prevent damage. No broken or damaged cartridges. NEW facility for May 2007.

Scrap metal

Soil - limited to 3 site wheel barrow loads per household in any 28 day period (one car boot load)

Textiles – clothes, footwear (tied in pairs), linen, curtains etc.

Timber and other wood products – see on site information for specific details

TVs and monitors - see the page 'Restrictions on rubbish accepted at Centres' for advice on computers and personal data. 

Tyres – Maximum of 4 tyres per household. Tyres should be removed from the metal rim. (Tyres should be recycled/disposed of by the tyre company who change your tyre)

What waste can't I take to the centre?

Hazardous Waste

The following hazardous waste is not accepted at the Centres:-

  • Trade waste or waste from commercial premises
  • Asbestos
  • Petrol and some other liquids
  • Chemicals and other toxic substances
  • Syringes and medical wastes
  • Poisons

Can I take my fridge, freezer or other large electrical item?

Yes but ask the attendant where you should leave the item
